Wendy Eisenberg
Wendy Eisenberg is a singer/songwriter, guitarist, banjoist, and poet. Whether employing free jazz, new music, extreme metal, or art song, her original music explores knotty questions about the place of the human body and the sometimes mercurial relationship it has with artistic practice. A member of experimental quartet Birthing Hips, their full-length debut, Urge to Merge, appeared that year. Eisenberg herself released two improv albums in 2018. 2021's Auto and Bent Ring earned global accolades. In 2024, Eisensberg released another pair of albums: Accept When, in collaboration with saxophonist Caroline Davis in April, and Viewfinder, released in September.
A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, she has written and performed in numerous projects, including with the experimental noise-punk band Birthing Hips with vocalist Carrie Furniss, drummer Owen Liza Winter, and bassist Andres Abenante. Her writings on music can be found in John Zorn's Arcana VIII: Musicians on Music, and on various jazz blogs. In addition, Eisenberg has collaborated with Joe Morris, Damon Smith, Zorn, and Travis LaPlante, to name a few. As a solo artist she has premiered original works by Zorn, Maria Schneider, and Bill Holman, among others. Eisenberg has two simultaneous solo careers: one as an improviser/composer, and one as a singer/songwriter. Her debut offering, Collected Early Works, was issued in the fall of 2015, followed by the EP Window Box in June the next year. In April of 2017, she issued her "songs" album, Time Machine, on HEC (reissued by Feeding Tube the following year). Birthing Hips' full-length debut, Urge to Merge, appeared on NNA Tapes in fall 2017. As an improviser, she issued two albums in October 2018: the solo improv date Its Shape Is Your Touch on VDSQ/Black Editions and The Machinic Unconscious on Tzadik in an improvisational trio with bassist Trevor Dunn and drummer Ches Smith. She also issued the solo singer/songwriter set Its Shape Is Your Touch.
In 2019, she worked with guitarist Shane Parish on the album Nervous Systems, a vanguard collection of original folk songs. Auto, her debut for Ba Da Bing, was released in 2020; it included solo performances as well as group undertakings of several songs. the following year the guitarist and vocalist recorded the trio offering Universal Dwellings on Rataplan. The lineup included violist Jessica Pavone and jazz drummer Devin Grey. She also released the double-length Bloodletting, a longform suite performed solo and recorded in a single day. She also released the limited-edition Bent Ring in an edition of 100 copies.
In 2024, after touring, working on recordings, and in concert with others, Eisenberg collaborated with saxophonist/composer Caroline Davis on the album Accept When; it was released in April by Heavenly Sweetness. She followed it in September with Viewfinder. Inspired by the Lasik surgery that saved her eyesight in 2021, she composed a song cycle for improvisers (its lead-off track was appropriately titled "Lasik"), that included trumpeter/electronicist Chris Williams, pianist/keyboardist Andrew Links, bassists Tyrone Allen II and Carmen Q. Rothwell, trombonist Zekereyya El Magharbel, and drummer Booker Stardrum. The set was released by American Dreams Records.
