Ginger Root

Indie soul outfit Ginger Root is the solo project of singer/multi-instrumentalist Cameron Lew, who puts a quirky spin on throwback R&B, disco, and pop. Ginger Root debuted with 2017's Spotlight People and had delivered its third album, Rikki, by 2020. Along with his Toaster Music covers series, Lew draws upon his love of '80s Japanese city pop, as on 2021's City Slicker EP and 2022's Nisemono EP. Ginger Root's fourth long-player, the 2024 concept album SHINBANGUMI, continued to dial up the grooves and whimsy for the project's Ghostly debut. Raised in Southern California, Cameron Lew initially launched Ginger Root in 2017 while a student at Orange County's Chapman University. At the time, he was also a member of the band Van Stock. He eventually collected all of his tracks, releasing them as Spotlight People. That same year, he launched an online video series called Toaster Music of him recording cover songs out of his car between classes. Lew's second full-length Ginger Root effort, Mahjong Room, appeared in 2018. Concurrently, he released a second volume of cover songs, Toaster Music, Vol. 2. Also that year, he performed a live recording session for Chicago's Audiotree Studios. Toaster Music, Vol. 3 arrived in May 2020. Delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Lew returned in October 2020 with the third Ginger Root album, Rikki. Several concept-driven EPs followed, including 2021's City Slicker (a soundtrack to an imagined '80s Japanese film) and 2022's Nisemono (whose story revolved around Ginger Root producing music for a fictitious Japanese pop star in 1983). With Lew's creations becoming only more confident, grooving, and whimsical, Ginger Root made its Ghostly International label debut with SHINBANGUMI. A concept album about a fired music supervisor who starts his own media conglomerate, it arrived on the label in September 2024.
