Kiasmos
Icelandic electronic duo Kiasmos, consisting of composer/producer Ólafur Arnalds and Bloodgroup's Janus Rasmussen, craft steadily paced, melody-rich techno tracks incorporating elements of modern classical and ambient music. Titling nearly all of their songs after verbs in past tense, Kiasmos were first heard on a 2009 split EP with Rival Consoles. Full-length debut Kiasmos, a set of cinematic minimal techno cuts with orchestral flourishes, appeared in 2014, as the duo established the project as a successful touring act. Following EPs such as 2017's Blurred, Kiasmos released second album II in 2024, taking their sound in a grander and more intricate direction.
Janus Rasmussen, originally from the Faroe Islands, first worked with Ólafur Arnalds when the Icelandic artist was engineering recording sessions for Rasmussen's electro-pop band Bloodgroup. The two began making techno tracks together, and their project, named Kiasmos, signed to Erased Tapes, which had also begun releasing Arnalds' neo-classical/post-rock solo work. 65/Milo, a split EP with Rival Consoles, appeared in 2009. The duo kept busy with their respective projects, but Kiasmos released the EP Thrown in 2012, featuring remixes by FaltyDL and 65daysofstatic. Full-length debut Kiasmos arrived in 2014, and a single version of breakout track "Looped" was issued in 2015. Two further EPs, Swept and Blurred, respectively appeared in 2015 and 2017, as the duo additionally remixed songs by Sasha, Tale of Us, Tom Walker featuring Zara Larsson, and others. Kiasmos worked extensively on their second album, including sessions in Bali that incorporated field recordings and gamelan percussion. II, a more fully orchestrated, widescreen effort than past Kiasmos releases, landed in 2024.
