Julie

Julie Ivalo Broberg Berthelsen (June 7, 1979) is a Danish singer-songwriter, mostly known for being the runner-up on the second season of the singing competition show Popstars in 2002. Born in the city of Aarhus, she relocated to Nuuk in Greenland with her mother shortly after her parents’ divorce. Influenced by her stepfather, the musician-turned-politician Per Berthelsen, she took her first steps in music as a backing vocalist for local bands. After forming her own band Nuna with a couple of friends, she moved to Norway and then returned to Aarhus, where she studied medicine. In 2002, Julie Berthelsen took a break from her studies to participate in the reality music show Popstars, finishing in second place and gaining nationwide fame before her studio debut Home (2003) topped the Danish charts for two consecutive weeks. The album proved to be a smash hit in her native Denmark, selling over 90,000 copies and earning Julie Berthelsen three awards for Danish Singer of the Year, Revelation of the Year, and Danish Pop Release of the Year at the Danish Music Awards 2004. Also in 2003, she sang the title song of the Christmas series Jesus & Josefine with Martin Brygmann. Further success ensued with the full-lengths Julie (2004) and Asasara (2011), the latter of which soared to the top of Denmark’s Hitlisten chart and achieved gold sales. Lige Nu, her first Danish album, appeared in 2009 and was followed by Closer in 2010.
