Nemahsis

At a time when making arresting indie pop would be enough, Canadian singer Nemahsis has also emerged as an influencer using her platform to draw attention to affairs that affect her and countless others as a Muslim woman of Palestinian heritage. She burst onto the scene in 2021 with the single “what if i took it off for you?” and crafted a moving artistic statement with the EP eleven achers a year later. In 2024, she switched gears as a fully independent artist on the singles “Stick of Gum” and “You Wore It Better.” Nemah Hasan, born and raised in the predominantly white Ontario suburb of Milton, at first made singing only part of her burgeoning artistic career, focusing primarily on creating fashion and makeup videos that centered around her identity as a hijab-wearing Muslim woman while posting the occasional cover song for fun. That all changed in 2021 with the jaw-dropping “what if i took it off for you?” A captivating single in its own right, audiences took notice when Hasan revealed the inspiration behind the song: a beauty company wanted to partner with her as an influencer, but offered no financial compensation, instead suggesting the exposure for “her community” would suffice. The track galvanized her to record more music inspired by her identity, culminating in the 2022 EP eleven achers and catchy singles “criminal” and “i want to be your right hand.” Hasan attracted more attention when she revealed that her label dropped her over pro-Palestine sentiments in the wake of the 2023 escalations in the Gaza strip. Undeterred, she self-released one of her most hook-laden tunes yet, “Stick of Gum,” accompanied by a video shot in Palestine. The follow-up, “You Wore It Better,” was promoted with a wry clip where she returned to an old high school job at a car wash, using her reduced promotional budget to entertain customers with the track.
