Recordings make it possible to have concerts and recitals by exceptional soloists immortalised. Music lovers of all generations have been able to witness, in their own living rooms, the great moments of the world's great concert halls by the legends of the moment: Rachmaninov, Horowitz, Richter, Pollini, Argerich and so many more. This album, published by DG, features the recital performed on April 26th 2022 at the Vienna Konzerthaus by one of today's phenomena: Yuja Wang. The Chinese pianist possesses a diabolical virtuosity and fiery temperament that has electrified crowds since her debut with Claudio Abbado, and her early, short notice step-ins for the faltering stars such as Martha Argerich or Radu Lupu. Despite the flashy exterior, Yuja Wang's playing is by no means superficial; she delves deep into the scores and composers she plays. The programme of this recital describes her eclecticism better than any critic could. Few pianists move so boldly from Albeniz and Malaga, to excerpts from Iberia, Scriabin's stormy Piano Sonata No. 3 in F# minor, all the way to the jazzy Preludes by Nikolai Kapustin, Beethoven's Sonata No. 18, and two Études by Ligeti. As for the many encore pieces, the list includes the likes of Philip Glass, Márquez, Brahms and even... Gluck! This delightful recital is a feast of pace and variety, figuring Wang as the wiley and frenetic ogress at the head of the table, exuberant with talent and appetite, cracking open the gristly complexity of her chosen compositions to show the audience the shining marrow within with glee. ©François Hudry/Qobuz
