From the very second track on When I’m Called, the sky opens up, light floods forth, angels sing, and our eyes fill with tears. This wonderful Benjamin Britten composition, “Cuckoo!,” is perfectly suited to the folksy American Jake Xerxes Fussell, this sweet genius of Appalachia. Born in Georgia before settling in North Carolina, he’s part of a long line of folk and blues lovers, carrying on the tradition as if nothing has ever changed. On this album, just as on previous ones, JXF mainly plays covers of traditional songs, music that is so old and modest that the names of its composers have gotten lost along the way. He unearths them, studies them, and lives and breathes them in order to feed his own music.

With his soft yet solid voice and his arrangements based on the swirling arpeggios of guitars and other acoustic string instruments, Jake Xerxes Fussell doesn’t try to innovate or show off. Instead, he digs deep into the trenches of tried and true folk, playing music like others may sculpt clay, distill bittersweet liquor, or paint atemporal landscapes. He’s discovered the genre’s best-kept secrets, and created songs that feel like sweet nothings that float off into clear blue skies.
