While researching a production of Puccini's La Fanciulla del West, Peter Sellars discovered letters written by Louise Clappe during the California Gold Rush of the 1850s while she was working for a mining company. They contain deeply moving stories of heroism, passion and cruelty, the kind of which have already been illustrated in cinema during the era of the great westerns, which inspired Peter Sellars to write a powerful, raw and un-romanticised libretto. For the occasion he has reunited with his long-time partner: the American composer John Adams. Premiered at the San Francisco Opera in 2017, before being presented in Dallas, Amsterdam and Venice, the work will be revived in 2023 at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles under the direction of its composer, recorded by Nonesuch, who also present its world recording premiere here on Qobuz. The opera recounts America’s genesis through its racial conflicts, exploits and political confrontations, on a land where everything had yet to be. John Adams's vigorous, rhythmic music evokes the industrial cacophony of those years. We feel the immensity of the American landscape, the ambient and naturalised racism counterpointed to individual concerns in a huge, colourful fresco that also serves as a mirror held up to the United States of today.
