The advantage of reaching a certain age is that you can do what you want. When you've got to the point where you’ve done everything, there’s no need to fret; you can still do anything. There’s nothing to prove, nothing to lose and nothing to gain, and you can say whatever the f#*k you feel like. With over 300 birthdays between them, Neil Young and his Crazy Horse mates are doing exactly that on this unlikely new album. Seeing all the unknowns on the track-listing, you'd think they were new songs, and that's good news. But if you dig a little deeper and listen carefully, you'll realise that you know all these songs by heart: they're from the Ragged Glory album, a great vintage from 1990, with just a few added tracks. Coincidentally, 1990 is also Micah Nelson’s birth year, Crazy Horse’s newest member, perhaps brought in to lower the band’s average age. You can't really hear it, but this album was recorded live in Canada, during a very private concert for a clothing brand’s anniversary party. In 1990, at the dawn of a particularly exciting decade for music, Ragged Glory was the album that introduced Neil Young and his band to the grunge generation. It was about songs, political awareness, electric guitars and checked shirts. By re-releasing this album 33 years later, Neil Young is taking the risk of exposing himself to comparative criticism: yes, on Fu##in' Up, his voice stutters and the feedback is often wheezy, but all in all, Crazy Horse still know how to make the earth shake and the guitars gush lava.
